An unusually-realistic serial-killer movie that doesn't focus on the killer but the police officers, forensics' experts, psychiatrists and journalists trying to find him. However, their own hang-ups get in the way - and he is somewhat cleverer than they are.
The most disturbing aspect is not the crimes, but that he commits them in different jurisdictions where the police compete with each other to solve the case. Their lack of effective co-operation is exacerbated by the many dead-ends, red-herrings and false confessions from those exercising their alleged constitutional right to be lonely.
Mark RUFFALO and Robert DOWNEY play their parts rather than try to win Oscars with them. But this is either too long to be a traditional serial killer film (excessive-gore is lacking) or conversely, too short, in its character-driven nature not being given full rein. The elliptical narrative structure also hampers audience involvement as does the fact that the film lacks a real ending because the true-life case was never quite satisfactorily resolved.
