Thunderball
(1965)

RATING:60%
FORMAT:DVD

A rather bloated movie, with scenes that lack tension because they last too long - the producers clearly wanted to display as much as they can of the equally-bloated budget.

The special effects were starting to take over from characterization and plot, at this stage in the series, and the fact that there are so many continuity errors suggests haste in the production. Individual scenes are excellent in themselves, but never really cohere - as the best Bonds do. Because the plot is straight out of Austin Powers, it has little to say about the political situation of the time - both cultural and sexual.

The girls are as lovely to look at as always - especially Luciana PALUZZIand the gadgets are fun, but the series was beginning to lose some of its innocent charm. Claudine AUGERis beautiful but bland, although PALLUZI more than makes up for this deficiency. There is also less humor than in previous 007outings, the lack of which unflatteringly lays bare the essentially-outlandish comic-strip nature of the series.

The additional problem here is the fact that 25% of the film is shot underwater; making the action scenes necessarily slow. This is not compensated for by fast-enough cutting; making this an unnecessarily long Bond. Nevertheless, Sean CONNERYis still the best of all possible Bonds in the worst of all possible worlds.

Sleep of Reason:

The dream of reason produces monsters. Imagination deserted by reason creates impossible, useless thoughts. United with reason, imagination is the mother of all art and the source of all its beauty.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes… (1746-1828), Spanish painter. Caption to Caprichos, number 43, a series of eighty etchings completed in 1798, satirical and grotesque in form.

Terence… (circa 190-159 BC), Roman dramatist. Chremes, in The Self-Tormentor [Heauton Timorumenos], act 1, scene 1.

Führerprinzip:

One leader, one people, signifies one master and millions of slaves… There is no organ of conciliation or mediation interposed between the leader and the people, nothing in fact but the apparatus - in other words, the party - which is the emanation of the leader and the tool of his will to oppress. In this way the first and sole principle of this degraded form of mysticism is born, the Führerprinzip, which restores idolatry and a debased deity to the world of nihilism.
