Ode to Friendship
Difficult to overestimate the sheer brilliance of this film, but it really is that good. Despite what appears to be a make-it-up-as-you-go-along plot, this is an affecting tale of friendship and endurance - come what may.
The alleged natural cruelty of children is strongly alluded to and one senses that the abuse of toys that often goes on speaks volumes for corollary parental abuse that is never shown here.
The voice acting that these animations so desperately need to be any good is particularly fine here since each character is sharply-delineated, especially Lee ERMEY here reprising his Full Metal Jacket drill sergeant and Tom HANKS - who can breathe life into a character just through his voice with subtlety and wit.
