Intelligent action/adventure about the political meaning and cost of art. The Maquisards here not only fight against the German occupation - usually with their lives - but also for their culture and its heritage.
Yet the film asks the basic question: Which is more important, a bunch of paintings (however great) or a human life (however low)? The answer is that no art is so great that it is worth more than a single human life.
The movie's only problem is that it is a tad too long for its theme, but enjoyable nonetheless for its vivid characters, superb performances and technical excellence.
