Institutional Racism versus The Hippocratic Oath
Fascinating, if rather academically‑written, look at how White people use soft‑sciences (like psychiatry) to label Blacks inferior because the hard sciences (like physics) offer no evidence or proof of same.
In this specific case, psychotropic drugs are suggested for Blacks who (drapetomaniacally) complain of having their civil rights infringed much more than for Whites who benefit from White supremacy; proving Whites view mental illness as a category befitting those who threaten them, politically; making psychiatry a politicized science oblivious to biological facts.
Over the course of the 20th‑century, schizophrenia has moved from being seen as a largely‑White, non‑threatening, middle‑class disorder to one seen as Black, dangerous and threatening – to Whites. This, in line with White anxieties concerning the alleged desire for Black revenge for centuries of past injustices against Blacks.
Thus, obedience to White norms is defined as Normal; while self‑determination for non‑Whites is defined as Abnormal. The philosophy of Adolf Hitler is seen by Whites as rational while anti‑racism is seen as psychotic; resulting in structural attempts to control Blacks rather than help those few Blacks who actually are schizophrenic.
’Black Psychosis‘ is an obvious attempt by Whites blame Blacks for the unavoidable White guilt that springs from unearned social‑privileges as well as the White schizophrenia this induces in those Whites who wish to escape their painful reality. So much so that the very definition of schizophrenia becomes a White supremacist labeling of Black people and reveals Whites as having failed in their belief that White science is somehow value‑free and objective while it engages in race‑based misdiagnosis and pseudo‑threat containment.
None of this is surprising since White attitudes importing insanity to those they disagree with are common rhetorical tropes when dealing with those Whites fear: You’re mad
; Are you out of your mind?
; You must be crazy!
etc. But this is crazy, in itself, and also explains why Whites tend to over‑medicate their own children when the latter demand the attention due to children. Like eugenics, Soviet psychiatry is an attempt at social control through (pseudo‑)science.
This book is an interesting journey into the minds of Whites and successfully makes the point understanding mental illness – more so than somatic disorder – requires an understanding of social context to avoid misdiagnosis. What may appear to be schizophrenic symptoms are more likely to be merely the survival strategies of Blacks in a White supremacist culture.
