Some Magic Moments
Although these are mostly catchy numbers, the basic problem with many of them is that they are not about the love they pretend to focus on. They are about need, loneliness and not growing up beyond having to whine-on – albeit in a tuneful way – about the fact that the world does not owe the lyricist an emotional living. Love is made and shared, not taken and hoarded.
Burt Bacharach and Hal David work best from the woman’s point of view; hence, their very fruitful collaboration with Dionne Warwick. Yet, these are really torch songs for men that, if you ignore much of the lyrical content, do provide a great deal of listening pleasure.
