Mongol
(2008)

RATING:60%
FORMAT:DVD

Confusingly-elliptical attempt to compress 20 years of epic history into two hours – no doubt partly the result of budgetary limitations.

In the midst of frequent gouts of fresh, arterial blood lies a profound romance, based upon genuine human values: Empathy, compassion & friendship. Toughness of spirit is also well to the fore; meaning that, in these regards, Hollywood could learn a thing or two about larger than life storytelling from the Russians.

Reflecting the lack of hard evidence for the life of Temujin, this film suffers from an unwillingness to use poetic licence to fill in the gaps in the historical narrative - as well as possessing a less than charismatic lead. His wife and blood brother are both excellent and carry the plot more than any other characters.

Führerprinzip:

One leader, one people, signifies one master and millions of slaves… There is no organ of conciliation or mediation interposed between the leader and the people, nothing in fact but the apparatus - in other words, the party - which is the emanation of the leader and the tool of his will to oppress. In this way the first and sole principle of this degraded form of mysticism is born, the Führerprinzip, which restores idolatry and a debased deity to the world of nihilism.
