Comizi d’Amore
(1965)

100%

A documentary regarding attitudes towards human sexual intercourse that can never really get under the skin of its subject because of the basic dishonesty of many of its interviewees. They clearly lie about the lack of inhibitions, for example, while constantly talking about sex in terms of pornography, prostitution and obscenity - rather than loving relations. Moreover, the fact that some explicit talk is clearly censored gives a better idea than the film itself as to why such films are always problematic to make – and to watch.

Urban dwellers are shown as being more sexually repressed than those living in rural areas, yet there is not enough insight into why this should be so. Particularly, the negative affects of Trinitarianism are evaded by those answering the questions although the interrogators clearly feel that that is the single biggest reason for the sexual problems of those they interview.

The ignorance and fear on display are the real subject of this non fiction piece. Fear, producing the cowardly desire to not know; ignorance, producing the fear of the unknown that inspires the ignorance. But, since it is impossible to avoid knowledge without committing suicide, one can never know what one wishes to avoid until after one has experienced it. And it is this self contradictory tension that is at the heart of all attempts at censorship. Those who are easily shocked are merely those who are the most psychologically insecure. People whose despairing conformism leads them to sublimate their sexuality through trying to control (ie, destroy) not the knowledge but its expression – along with the sexual happiness of others. A fascinating view of White Western culture's unusual obsession with sex.

The dream of reason produces monsters. Imagination deserted by reason creates impossible, useless thoughts. United with reason, imagination is the mother of all art and the source of all its beauty.

Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes… (1746-1828), Spanish painter. Caption to Caprichos, number 43, a series of eighty etchings completed in 1798, satirical and grotesque in form.

Terence… (circa 190-159 BC), Roman dramatist. Chremes, in The Self-Tormentor [Heauton Timorumenos], act 1, scene 1.

Führerprinzip:

One leader, one people, signifies one master and millions of slaves… There is no organ of conciliation or mediation interposed between the leader and the people, nothing in fact but the apparatus - in other words, the party - which is the emanation of the leader and the tool of his will to oppress. In this way the first and sole principle of this degraded form of mysticism is born, the Führerprinzip, which restores idolatry and a debased deity to the world of nihilism.
