Emotionally engrossing cross between The Winslow Boy and Rain Man: A story of moral integrity in the face of materialist politicking. Should your friends – be they right or wrong – be sold out to others pursuing the truth?
Unusually, this Hollywood movie takes sides concerning loyalty and so is not ethically & dramatically compromised schmaltz – as befits the movie’s basic theme. By helping a young man with his moral dilemma, the older man comes to understand his own troubles and they both benefit from the experience.
Al PACINO deserved his Oscar for the difficult role of a blind man who elicits little sympathy – he is a misogynist with a chip on his shoulder. Yet, against your better judgement, you find yourself empathising with him. Ultimately, a critique of the lack of integrity and character in US political life.
