In the increasingly-alienated White culture depicted here, lack of trust and concomitant lack of personal responsibility is reflected in the murderous rage of many of the characters - along with the suitably-barren desert landscape through which they travel.

The characters here attempt to blame their bad behavior on either others or Fate and only the lackluster beginning makes you think the remainder of the movie might not be worth the effort: But you will be very glad that you stayed with it to the end.

The first-rate acting compensates for the too-implicit character-motivation, in the serial killer film Stanley Kubrick might have directed.
