WEBSITE: Katalin Varga...

Above-average rape and revenge tragedy where human actions are dictated by the demands of the conscience. This fatalistic approach fails to explore the attempts by the guilty to evade their shame, through such well worn techniques as lying and schizophrenia, and so does not completely understand the issues presented.

Nevertheless this is a simple and austere treatment of difficult subject matter aided and abetted by superlative acting - especially from Hilda PÉTER. She possesses a true cinematic presence that lets you know what she is thinking with a minimum of dialogue; adding to the intense atmosphere of the drama as a whole.

Along with Ingmar BERGMAN’s Virgin Spring, this ranks as one of the best of its type.
